Culture and lifestyle

Dubai’s culture is shaped by the Islamic traditions of Arabia. Islam is more than just a religion – it governs all aspects of life, including clothing, food and drink.

Courtesy and hospitality are highly prized virtues, and visitors will find the local people generally warm and friendly. The UAE is a tolerant and welcoming country where foreigners are free to practice their own religion. Alcohol is served in hotels and the dress code is relatively liberal.

Clothing

Even though Dubai has a liberal attitude, it is always wise to respect the religion and culture of the City by wearing appropriate, more modest clothing in public places, and not exposing too much skin.

Summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but sometimes slightly warmer clothing may be needed for winter evenings (or strong air conditioning!).

During the day, protect yourself from the sun with hats, sunglasses and plenty of sun cream.

Alcohol

Alcohol is served in licensed restaurants and bars that are located within hotels or certain sports clubs. Residents can get a liquor licence, which allows them to buy alcohol in bottle stores in Dubai.

Tipping

Tipping practices are similar to most parts of the world. Service may be included in the bill, otherwise 10 – 15% usual.

Bargaining

Bargaining is a traditional part of doing trade in the Emirates and it is still widely accepted, especially in the souks. Once you get into it, you might end up enjoying it and bagging yourself a bargain or two in the process.

Customs

After collecting your luggage in the arrival hall, your bags are x-rayed. There is no customs duty on personal effects in entering Dubai. It is against the law to bring in drugs or pornography. There is a small duty free outlet in the arrivals hall. Duty free allowances: 2000 cigarettes; a reasonable quantity of cigars and tobacco; 2 litres of spirits and 2 litres of wine (non-Moslem adults only); perfume for personal use.
